Kent:

Why being a solution focused hypnotherapist the key to my success

The class of CPHT Kent 2018

Let me tell you my story. Way back in 2012 I qualified with a diploma in hypnotherapy and counselling skills, from an unregulated school of hypnotherapy, run by someone who claimed to have had a successful hypnotherapy practice.

I would be lying if I said I hadn’t loved the course, it was fascinating and I learned all sorts of exciting, but sometimes nerve-wracking therapeutic interventions. I learn’t a little psychology, some basic counselling skills, how to cope with severe abreactions (that’s snot and tears to you and me). However, I was consistently worried about what the right intervention would be to treat the client and wondered how effective the treatment was long-term, but was told that was normal, not to worry and I would figure it out as I got more experience.

Consequently, despite working very hard and continuing training whenever I could, it took me over two years to really get my practice to a point where it could support me and my daughter, and during that time I was stressed, exhausted and constantly wondering if it wouldn’t just be easier to get a job.  You see, my course missed out something that every therapist must have – a repeatable process for treating a client.  All I had when I graduated were lots of interventions and a certificate.

It all felt a bit ‘smoke and mirrors’ and, what annoyed me most, was that I couldn’t explain, in anything other than vague metaphorical terms, exactly what was happening in my client’s minds to make the difference…even when the results were brilliant!

One day, I was complaining about it to hypnotherapist colleague and  friend, Gary Johannes, who seemed to get near miraculous results and a stream of gushing testimonials from clients, saying how he had been instrumental in helping them change their lives forever.  I don’t know what came over me, but I uttered the now infamous (in CPHT Kent at least) words “You do the worst hypnosis but you get the best results!”

I actually cringe when I read that, but at the same time I knew nothing different; I was taught that the hypnotist held the power and had to be exceptionally skilled, being able to ‘make’ their ‘subjects’ perform all sorts of phenomena and I had to ‘prove’ hypnosis worked.  My friend on the other hand seemed to simply read a few language patterns (in my arrogance I questioned whether it was even hypnosis) and miracles occurred.  Of course what I didn’t know about was the rock solid, results driven, scientifically supported therapy that encased this gentle, therapeutic trance that supports the brain in finding the best solutions.

Gary forgave my rudeness, because he knew why and how he got those results and proceeded to tell me about the brain and exactly how he helped his clients get over anxiety, depression, trauma, addictions and more, with a thing called Solution Focused Hypnotherapy.  I was skeptical, but kept thinking about his testimonials which had inspired me so much.

A year or so later, as I was still working very hard and reading a lot, Gary was asked by CPHT Principal David Newton if he would like to start a CPHT training school in Peterborough.  I jumped at the chance to enrol on the first CPHT Peterborough course, particularly as I would be trained by someone I admired greatly. I very quickly began to see how empowering the therapy was for clients, but also how energising it was for me, both of which were completely new concepts. In my original training I was used to my clients going through boxes and boxes of tissues and me struggling to find a good work life balance.

Suddenly, as I began to switch my practice over to the solution focused approach, working with clients no longer seemed like work, it became a vocation, something that gave me a spring in my step and had me telling anyone who would listen about this amazing therapy that could help resolve the past without delving into it.

But that’s not the end of the story.  As my practice grew I continued to see friends, colleagues and some of the people who trained at that first school either retrain or simply stop doing therapy altogether.  It made me sad and angry, particularly as some of them were amazing therapists who had spent their

time and money to then abandon something they were good at, which should have been a successful career vocation.

I wanted to help them.  At first I mentored other therapists but quickly realised I could only help them so much, because I was just helping them fix exactly the same problems I had encountered at the start.  I knew the problem was not them, but the way they worked. There was only one thing for it – start a CPHT in Kent.  So we did. Gary and I launched CPHT Kent in January 2018.

Our first class graduated in October and I’m loving the stories they are already telling me about how they are enjoying building their practices.  It is exciting to watch because it is important work they are doing. For me, the better prepared they are, the better supported they are, the better trained they are, the more people they help.  Mission accomplished.

That brings us up to date with my story…but are you ready for the next chapter of your story to begin?

10 Reasons Solution Focused Hypnotherapists LOVE their Career

smiling orange fruit or a happy hypnotherapist you decideYou’ll recognise a solution focused hypnotherapist by their smile, their confidence and their openness about what they do and exactly how they help people, but what makes a solution focused hypnotherapist love their career so much? We asked some of our friends and graduate solution focused hypnotherapists and this is what they said.

1: You’ll feel like a superhero, because you are literally changing people’s lives every day.  What you do, as a solution focused hypnotherapist, is important; you help people get their lives back on track. By changing their world you are changing the world. You make a positive difference.

2: You are in charge of when and how much you work. If you are fed up with working for other people, doing a job that isn’t important or being stopped from doing what’s right in a job that is important, being a solution focused hypnotherapist will give you flexibility and freedom to work at times that suit you.

3: You can work from home.  Although many SF hypnotherapists work in clinics, many also work from a dedicated therapy room in their home.  Quite often their children have moved out and they have space to use, or convert a garage or summerhouse into a therapy room.  Wherever you decide to work, it is up to you.

4: It is simple.  Solution focused hypnotherapy is a modern form of hypnotherapy that, although isn’t necessarily easy to do, is simple for your clients to understand and because they ‘get it’ they move forward quickly.  Simple means that what seemed like overwhelming issues, for your clients, can be overcome by making consistent small changes.  It makes the impossible, possible.

5: It is evidence and science based.  Many people who were, or continue to be, in the medical profession train for a career as a solution focused hypnotherapist because this is one of the few forms of hypnotherapy that is evidence based and underpinned by the latest findings in neuroscience.

6: It is safe.  Solution focused hypnotherapy is safe for you and safe for your clients because we don’t use potentially damaging, old fashioned or out of date therapy.  We know that, in order to resolve the past it is NOT necessary and sometimes unhelpful or harmful to do delve into it. Your clients enjoy it more and, because we explain how the brain works, feel in control and empowered when they are working with you.

7: It is fun.  It is no wonder solution focused hypnotherapist love their career; in solution focused hypnotherapy we encourage our clients to enjoy their sessions, laughter is helpful and we can laugh with them.  We don’t go through boxes or tissue every week, our clients look forward to their sessions and feel better after each one.

8: Lots of variety.  In the morning you might be helping someone stop smoking, follow that helping someone get back to work after a bought of depression, in the afternoon help someone go for a promotion, and finish the day helping a teenager overcome exam nerves.  You’ll never be bored because every day is different and you always end the day feeling liked you’ve helped.

9: You’ll be learning all the time and can pursue your interests. Every day we are discovering more about how the brain works and the field of neuroscience and neuroscience based therapies is developing fast.  This means, as your training school, we want to keep up with those advances.  Rather than relying on outmoded thinking we find out what the best of the best of therapy has to offer and use that to keep you up to date in your learning.

10: You have control of your career and your finances. Hypnotherapy is currently the fastest growing industry in the UK and solution focused hypnotherapy, as taught by CPHT, is recognised as one of the most successful and reputable forms of hypnotherapy that delivers consistent results.

Bonus 11: Solution focused hypnotherapists trust the quality of their training.  Your training is independently assessed, has a nationally recognised qualification and gives you the opportunity to go on to train for the most advanced approved hypnotherapy level training in the UK.  CPHT is highly respected within the hypnotherapy community and the founder, David Newton, has been interviewed for Radio 4 among others and spoken at the largest hypnotherapy conference in the UK.

If you want to be at the cutting edge of hypnotherapy and make a real difference to the clients you see in the future, with a successful career in hypnotherapy this could be the right Course for you.  To find out about the next hypnotherapy diploma course run by CPHT Kent, just give senior lecturer Gary Johannes a call on 07780 592625 or click this link to send us an application form today.

Gary Johannes is an experienced psychotherapist and practicing Senior Solution Focused Hypnotherapist.  He is director of Inspired To Change Associates a clinical mental health services provider with clinics around the country, specialising in the Solution Focused Hypnotherapy approach. He qualified at CPHT Bristol in 2012, under the tutelage of David Newton, head of the CPHT schools and the originator of using Solution Focused techniques in hypnotherapy.

Gary is a Hypnotherapy Supervisor and Senior Lecturer for CPHT Peterborough, Birmingham, Nottingham and Kent, which gives him access to the latest neuroscientific research and findings, almost as soon as they are released.  He is an authorised Mental Health First aid Trainer and speaker on Mental Health Awareness.  Gary’s passion lies in enabling people to overcome their limiting beliefs and be the most successful version of themselves.

Brain Scanners for Hypnotherapy Training

brain scanner on hypnotherapy studentCPHT strive to be at the cutting edge of available research and technology, looking for innovative ways to give the most clinical evidence to students about why solution focused hypnotherapy has such a significant and lasting effect on clients.  It’s that ‘backed up by the latest research and findings in science’ that attracts so many students and we know that your future clients will often say it is why they chose you over another hypnotherapist. We live in a world where we are beginning to be able to prove why things work, which is why we take on that responsibility as your training school.

One of the biggest challenge’s hypnotherapist have had historically is being able to explain, how and why hypnotherapy actually works.  Clients are curious as to what’s happening to them, sometimes a little nervous. Which is why we are so excited to be able to offer CPHT Kent students access to a very special piece of equipment, the Emotiv brain scanning device, so that our students can see, in glorious technicolor, what happens in the human brain when we use trance, which parts of the brain react and how trance is enhanced by the solution focused approach to therapy, when combined together.

As far as we know, CPHT is the only hypnotherapy training school to bring such advanced and innovativebrain scanner on hypnotherapy student technology into the classroom, although we hope other schools will start to use this device too; it is the first time students on a hypnotherapy training course can see what they will be doing to someone’s brain when they use trance, and how beneficial it is for the brain. Students who have seen the brain scanner in action say it took away any doubt they had about the learning they were about to embark upon and it gave them more confidence when offering trance and therapy, even from the first weekend of training.

This is a new addition to training from 2018, because CPHT Kent believe, as do all CPHT hypnotherapytraining schools, that a deeper understanding of exactly how hypnosis works improves the confidence of practitioners, which will improve client results. With this exciting piece of equipment, you can tell clients what’s going on before during and after trance.  It is possible CPHT trained hypnotherapists may be the only hypnotherapists who, with total certainty, having seen it for themselves, will be able to do that.

What You’ll Find Out At A Hypnotherapy Training Open Evening

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world ~ Nelson Mandela

When looking for the hypnotherapy training that’s best for you, after checking out the website and reading the reviews the most logical step is to meet your hypnotherapy training lecturers at an open evening or open day event.

This gives you the chance to meet the people training you, check out your training environment and most importantly, get all your questioned answered so you can make the best choice for your hypnotherapy training.

CPHT Kent offer several open evening dates for our potential hypnotherapy students to come along, meet us and find out what makes CPHT the fastest growing hypnotherapy training provider in the UK.

We run CPHT Kent open evenings are at our Hypnotherapy Training venue – The Friars Conference Centre in Aylesford in Kent, because it means when you come along for your first weekend of training you’ll already be familiar with your surroundings.

We run them in the evening because our students, who are often career changers or returners, have found this is the easiest time for you to come along.

CPHT Kent Hypnotherapy Training open evening events are informal, in a Q & A style, because, we’ve found this style has given our hypnotherapy students the best opportunity to get the information you need to make the right decision for you.

What you can expect at one of our Hypnotherapy Training Open Evenings:

  • Meet both your lecturers
  • See your teaching room and the venue
  • Have access to more information about the course and your future career
  • An informal and welcoming environment
  • Ample opportunity to ask questions
  • Get expert and open responses about every aspect of your training and future career
  • Access to two successful practitioners who run busy practices and tell it like it is
  • Two very passionate people who want to help you make the right choice for you

What you won’t get at one of our hypnotherapy training open evenings

  • Hard Sell – that’s just icky and we don’t do icky.
  • Formal interviews – it isn’t a job interview and your life experience is probably the most important aspect of your skill as a future therapist. We want to meet the real you.
  • Boring presentations – because we want to deliver what you want to know about
  • Therapists who don’t practice, who don’t understand the real world of hypnotherapy today. Hypnotherapy is the fastest growing profession in the UK and we believe that no student should ever be taught by someone who doesn’t practice and understand what it takes to be a successful hypnotherapist.

Where can I find hypnotherapy training in Kent?

Courage is found in unlikely places ~ J. R. R. Tolkien

What’s in a venue?  You might think a venue is of minor importance when running a hypnotherapy training course, particularly in Kent, where there are so many venues on offer. However, at CPHT Kent, we know the value of the right environment to support your learning.

Your hypnotherapy training should be a real experience, one that you look back on as one of the best decisions you made and experiences you had.

We are delighted to have found the perfect place for this – The Friars, in Aylesford.  Not only do they have the friendliest people looking after you during your training course, but the grounds are magical, it’s got a low cost parking option (so rare in Kent!), two choices of places to get food on site and nearby road and rail links to the rest of Kent.

If you are not quite sure where The Friars is – you’ll find it just a just a short drive from Aylesford village; nearby villages and towns are Kings Hill, East Malling, West Malling, Allington and Maidstone itself.  There are many beautiful listed buildings in this ancient and peaceful place, which is set in magnificent grounds, perfect for a lunchtime walk or an outside lunch when the course moves into summer.

Having looked all over Kent, at so many training venues for the hypnotherapy course, we knew as soon as we walked into The Friars and met with their wonderful staff, that this would be the place our students would enjoy and benefit from the most.

We look forward to welcoming you along to one of our open evenings and the upcoming hypnotherapy training course.  For more details on upcoming events and training, click on open-days-for-cpht-kent-hypnotherapy-training-courses.  If we don’t have an open evening coming up why not give us a call instead.

Can Hypnotherapy Training Help Me In My Current Role?

graduate as a hypnotherapistDr Bridget Cook is a successful and experienced chiropractor, so why did she decide to add a diploma in solution focused hypnotherapy to her skill-set?  Here, Bridget share’s her reasons and experiences of adding another string to her bow.

Currently I am a Chiropractor training in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, which might seem a little odd. However, there are actually a lot of overlaps. Many of my Chiropractic patients re-present repeatedly with aches and pains caused by posture, injury and more than often driven by an element of stress and tension which means hypnotherapy can be very beneficial, to not just for mental wellbeing but that of the physical body too.

Chiropractic is a very physical job and, due to my genetics, it is likely that I won’t be able to physically do my job right up to retirement age.  I wanted to find a way to continue to help people out of pain, even when I can no longer practise Chiropractic and training to be a hypnotherapist will enable me to do this.

I have benefitted myself from learning about and understanding, how the brain works and what a healthy mind looks and feels like.  I am half way through my training and I feel lighter, brighter and confident. The trials and tribulations of life still happen but they are more manageable and I see a future full of helping people feel the same way.

If you’ve been inspired by Bridget’s story, why not take charge of your future too and apply to be on our next course.  Training is over 10 months and you’ll be working towards the Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma (HPD), the only nationally recognised and independently assessed hypnotherapy qualification in the UK.  Click here to apply now

Dr Bridget Cook runs Greenacres Chriopractic and, since completing her Hypnotherapy Training and qualifying in 2016, Bridget now runs both her Chiropractic and Hypnotherapy Clinics from her premises in  Glinton near Peterborough. Can I train as a hypnotherapist if I’m a stay at home mum?

Sarah had aced being a mum for 20 years and had safely ushered her youngest son off to university.  Whilst she appreciated every moment of that time, she acknowledged that it hadn’t necessarily helped her with her confidence at being ‘Sarah’ or getting back out to work.

I had become an expert at getting the stains out of rugby kits and could bake a reasonable cake but the thought of going out to work was very daunting!

baby and puppyAs Sarah says – over the last couple of years we had, as a family, seen first-hand the true value of hypnotherapy and what powerful change it can bring about.  My husband had been commuting for five hours a day and after nine years this started to take its toll and he began to suffer panic attacks on the train.  Visits to the doctor and several sessions of counselling had little impact and then quite by chance I came across a leaflet that on one side exactly described his symptoms and on the other explained how hypnotherapy could help.

My husband started regular sessions of hypnotherapy with Gary Johannes, of Inspired to Change.  Almost instantly he started to feel better and within a few weeks he was back at work.  I was fascinated by the power of hypnotherapy and started to look into training courses.

As if it was meant to be, we received an email from Gary to say that he was starting a CPHT Hypnotherapy training course in Peterborough.  The Clifton Practice Hypnotherapy Training (CPHT) is a nationwide training provider of the only nationally recognised hypnotherapy diploma in the UK – the Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma (HPD).

I already knew just how powerful this form of hypnotherapy was and so had no concerns about the subject of the course itself however I was nervous about my own ability to study after all these years.  Gary was very reassuring, he explained that it was a very practical course where you are encouraged to start seeing clients from the very beginning and you are well supported throughout.  The academic side clearly explained and you are given plenty of time to complete the work.

I thoroughly enjoyed doing this course; it stretched me and I learnt so much about myself, as well as how to really help and make a difference to my clients.

Don’t let age or lack of self-belief stop you from training to become a hypnotherapist by taking this course; it is good to stretch yourself and discover what you are truly capable of.  Think of all the good you can do, for so many people.

If you’ve been inspired by Sarah’s story, why not take charge of your future too and apply to be on our next course.  Training is over 10 months and you’ll be working towards the Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma (HPD), the only nationally recognised and independently assessed hypnotherapy qualification in the UK.  Click here to apply now

About Sarah:

Why I trained to be a hypnotherapist

People ask me why I retrained to be a hypnotherapist.  I say it is because hypnotherapy helped me stop being part of the 1 in 4 of us who struggle with a mental health issue and gave me back my health, happiness and a new career!

Caroline Prout is a highly qualified solution focused hypnotherapist, hypnotherapy supervisor and lectures for CPHT Peterborough.  This is her journey from illness to wellness and beyond.

1 in 4 of us will suffer from some form of mental health issue every year. The pressures of our modern lives means stress, anxiety and depression are on the rise and our National Health Service is struggling to keep up.

4 years ago I was one of those 1 in 4. A diagnosis of M.E. (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) had seen me go from someone who ran twice a week, swam twice a week and worked just as hard in a very successful career to someone who struggled to put one foot in front of another and string together a decent sentence. The uncertainty during the 2 years it took to get a diagnosis sent my anxiety rocketing and my confidence plummeting and, what had started out as a physical health issue, spiralled into a mental health issue too.

I’m pleased to say I am no longer one of the 1 in 4 – I’m now one of the 1 in 36,000. I’m one of the growing body of professional hypnotherapists who are leading the way in the mental health arena, helping those 1 in 4 overcome their stress, anxiety or depression, building their confidence and self-esteem so they can move forward with their lives.

Hypnotherapy helped me get my life back on track. I recognised that the high stress work environment I had thrived in before was no longer doing me any favours. I was so inspired by how hypnotherapy had helped me that I rather rashly decided the solution was to retrain as a hypnotherapist myself.

It sounded great as I imagined it in my mind – how lovely it would be to help others every day, to choose the hours I wanted to work, to ditch the daily commute. What a fulfilling life I would have! But then reality hit, I couldn’t just give up work and retrain and set up a new business – I had a mortgage to pay!

My hypnotherapist recommended I contact CPHT, because they provided the best qualification in the UK – if you’re going to do something you’ve got to do it properly right. I had a mixture of excitement and disappointment swirling around my mind as I picked up the phone to them – I’d read about their diploma course and it sounded amazing but I couldn’t see how I could find the time or the money to retrain. So I was delighted to learn that I could do the course at weekends and pay for it in monthly instalments! So there really was nothing holding me back.

I could not have imagined that just a few years later I would not only have my own busy practice, where I work the hours that suit me and my life, but also help other people fulfil their dreams.  When I made that phone call a few years ago it was just a dream, but now I don’t have to imagine how lovely it is to help people every day, I don’t have to imagine what it’s like to choose when I want to work, because that’s my life!

I don’t have to imagine what my life would be like without the daily commute and the stressful work environment. I live that fulfilling life every day on the other side of the 1 in 4 – as part of the solution, not feeling stuck in the problem.

If you’ve been inspired by Caroline’s story, why not take charge of your future too and apply to be on our next course.  Training is over 10 months and you’ll be working towards the Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma (HPD), the only nationally recognised and independently assessed hypnotherapy qualification in the UK.  Click here to apply now
